Americans spent $98 billion out of pocket on prescription drugs in 2024, and projections show a 25% increase in the next five years. And 28% of prescriptions never get filled. The No. 1 reason? Cost. In a recent episode of the HiFi Health News podcast, host Erika Grotto interviewed Ruchika Talwar, MD, MMHC, medical director of Vanderbilt Health's Office of Episodes of Care, on how patients can save money on their prescription drugs by going to the right pharmacy at the right time.
Here are a few of Dr. Talwar's suggestions for lowering the cost burden:
Look for coupons. Companies such as GoodRx, WellRx, SingleCare, BuzzRx and Blink Health can help patients get discounts at the pharmacy window.
Consider mail-order pharmacies. Online pharmacies such as the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company and Amazon Pharmacy offer prescription drugs at lower prices, though patients may need to do some math to ensure significant savings.
Ask your doctor or neighborhood pharmacist. These experts often have insights on how to find the best prices for medications.
