For Jackie Davis, a licensed master social worker at Vanderbilt Health, caring for others is part of her everyday life. Working remotely to support behavioral health patients after hospitalizations or emergency room visits, she is well-versed in the value of accessible, supportive care.
So when she became pregnant with her son, she knew exactly where to turn: Vanderbilt's MyMaternityHealth Bundle, a benefit offered through her employer.
The bundle provides an enhanced experience for expectant mothers with low to no out-of-pocket costs. The program takes an innovative approach that coordinates and “bundles” all the services an expectant mother and baby need. Patients receive high-touch support from a navigator.
‘Someone on My Side’
Jackie and her husband live in Smyrna with their blended family of five. Her connection to MyMaternityHealth actually began earlier, after experiencing a miscarriage in 2024. Even then, she felt supported. So, when she became pregnant again that summer, she signed up immediately for the bundle.
Jackie was quickly reconnected with patient navigator Nikita Walton, who played a key role throughout her pregnancy. From sending pregnancy education emails and reminders to helping Jackie navigate scheduling challenges, Nikita became a trusted guide. “She was always responsive, usually within two hours,” Jackie said. “It made me feel like I had someone on my side.”
Jackie’s journey wasn’t without twists. Though she initially began care with an obstetrician following her earlier loss, she eventually transitioned to the Vanderbilt Birthing Center. Her son, however, had his own plans and arrived five weeks early, requiring delivery at Vanderbilt University Hospital with the help of Vanderbilt midwives. Despite the unexpected timeline, Jackie had the unmedicated birth she’d envisioned—with Vanderbilt Children’s NICU nearby just in case.
“Cate, the midwife who delivered my son, was phenomenal,” Jackie said. “I joked that if he had been a girl, I’d have named the baby after her.”
Lots of Support, No Out-of-Pocket Costs
Beyond care coordination, Jackie found value in the educational resources bundled into the program, such as childbirth preparation, labor and newborn care.
“As a first-time mom, I felt so much more confident having a resource to tell me what was going to happen,” she said. “It took away a lot of the anxiety, and I don’t think I could have had an unmedicated delivery had I not had that information.”
She was particularly grateful for lactation support, which included a prenatal lactation consultation and follow-up sessions after birth. “That made me feel a lot more confident,” Jackie said.
Beyond the patient support, the bundle alleviated financial stress. With her son's premature birth, Jackie worried that there would be significant out-of-pocket costs. But there weren’t. “Everything in my pregnancy was truly 100% covered, and I feel so grateful for that,” she said. “We’re buying a home, and I honestly don’t think we could have done that and had a baby in the same year without the bundles program.”
Jackie enthusiastically recommends the MyMaternityHealth Bundle to anyone eligible, rating it a 10 out of 10. “I couldn't imagine going through pregnancy without it,” she said.
