How Genesco Uses Vanderbilt Executive Health Physicals to Invest in Leaders

At Genesco, supporting the health and well-being of executives isn't just a perk—it's a strategic decision. Through Vanderbilt’s Executive Health Physicals (EHP) program, Genesco delivers a unique benefit that has real impact for its leadership team. The company implemented the program to provide busy professionals with a high-value benefit that’s often overlooked: a way to better manage their own health.

Through the EHP program, executives attend one half-day session, which includes a full medical assessment, same-day testing and consultation, and a personalized health and wellness strategy that extends beyond the appointment. On top of the comprehensive exam, participants receive quick referrals to Vanderbilt Health specialists as needed.

“We wanted to offer something that would meet our busy leaders where they are—often not prioritizing themselves—and give them an opportunity to address their health in a meaningful, proactive way,” said Cindy Dempsey, Director, Total Rewards at Genesco. “The Executive Health Physicals program has been really well received. I've had amazing feedback.”

A Warm Reception

When the program launched, Dempsey expected modest initial uptake, but the response exceeded expectations.

“I thought maybe 10 people would sign up, and we’d need to campaign for more. But after our first communication, more than half of our eligible executives had already reached out,” she said.

The Vanderbilt Employer Success Program worked closely with Genesco to develop communications and ensure both executives and their administrative staff understood the benefit.

“Most vendor partners just hand us a flyer and say, ‘Go communicate this,’” Dempsey noted. “But Vanderbilt Health gave us a dedicated point person and became the face of the program. That made all the difference, especially for our lean HR team.”

Proving Well-Being Matters

Ultimately, the EHP program does more than screen for health concerns. It signals to leaders that their well-being matters.

“It’s an investment that shows we value our people,” Dempsey said. “It sends the message: We care about you, not just as an employee, but as a person.”

The result? Feedback on the program has been overwhelmingly positive. Executives routinely stop Dempsey to share their experiences.

“One executive told me she never makes time for her health—she’s a leader here, she’s raising young kids—but after her physical, she felt empowered and at ease. She even formed a strong relationship with her provider. That’s exactly the kind of experience we hoped to deliver,” Dempsey said.
